The Rafferty group research interests are based around structural investigation mainly via X-ray crystallography of proteins and nucleic acid complexes, including DNA and RNA binding proteins. Projects have involved targets from bacterial pathogens, from biotechnologically interesting organisms and from eukaryotes including humans.
In the area of nucleic metabolism, this has included transcriptional regulators, recombination organizers and replication proteins and their complexes. The lab carries out the full range of approaches from cloning and protein purification, via simple biochemical and biophysical assays through to structure determination and analysis. Collaborations have been at the heart of most projects and this has proved to be an effective as well more enjoyable way of pursuing the work.
